Are you new to Calgary? (or Edmonton, Saskatoon, Lethbridge, Surrey, Abbotsford or most cities in Canada?) Moved into a brand new apartment (like Mainstreet) and want to meet new people? Going to university/college and looking for some cool activities to do? I moved to Calgary a few years ago, and someone told me about this amazing website called Meetup (it is completely free to join). http://www.meetup.com/
You can join groups and they "meetup" to do pretty much anything you can imagine. There are groups for hiking, for walking pugs, for knitting, for singles, for dungeons and dragon roleplaying, for free fitness bootcamps; and those are the ones I see listed for today in Calgary. You can meet up with 100 other people for a wings and beer night, or attend a book club group.
When you request to join most groups, you have to answer three questions for the organizer. Then you are able to attend events. Most events are free, or there is a listed price for the event attending. One of the groups, called the "Pursuit of Happiness Social Club", has over 4,000 members in Calgary, which means great turnouts to events. You have to watch upcoming events as there are sometimes a limit on the number of members that can attend, but if it is full, you can go on a waitlist.
There are groups for business, busy mom, music, fitness, spiritual awareness, dating, cooking, photography: you name it, you can probably find the group on Meetup. And if you can't find the group you want, you can start your own group and have people join and come to events.
I suggest you check the site out; it is a great way to meet new people, get out of the apartment, and make new friends.
