History of Vernon
The place on the map where we find Vernon was first settled by the Interior Salish people who called the area Nintle Moos Chin, meaning "jumping over the place where the creek narrows". These people, the Okanagan, settled around two lakes in the area which offered seasonal sustenance. This settlement eventually attracted European trade to the area, and gold discovery in 1863 and the erection of a Hudson's Bay Store years later saw Vernon grow large enough in population and importance to be incorporated in 1892. The city has continued to grow throughout its existence, and Vernon currently hosts a population of 40,000 people while the Greater Vernon Area is closer to 60,000 people.
