History of Prince George
Prince George lies in a large valley at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako rivers and has been home to the Lheidli T’enneh First Nations for centuries. When the North West Company set up a fur trading post in 1807, they called the post "Fort George" in honour of King George III. The post remained isolated for decades, with most trade occurring at the larger Fort St. James trading post. Contemporary Prince George began to develop in 1903, when railway development spurred land development in turn, leading to the creation of townships called Fort George and South Fort George which eventually became the modern city of Prince George with a population of approximately 74,000 people.
Economy & Working in Prince George
Prince George has traditionally been a resource-based economy focused on forestry but is becoming a service-based economy as the 21st century progresses. Government services such as the Northern Health Authority are major employers in this sector. Schools such as the University of Northern British Columbia and the College of New Caledonia represent significant contributions to the local economy approaching a billion annually as of 2021. Resources are still a major part of this economy, however, and their oil refinery and increasing mining exploration may come to dominate again, especially with a substantial oil deposit in the Nechako Basin.
