Nothing can ruin a beautiful Sunday like a hangover from having too much fun on Saturday night. We love a party, but everyone hates that feeling the morning after consuming a little too much. There’s a lot of advice out there, but most of it is marketing that doesn’t have much real science behind it. We’ve tried to sort through the nonsense to get you the facts on how to ease your hangover and take back your Sunday with these tips!
1. Obvious Parental Tip: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
Moderating your consumption is obviously the best way to prevent a hangover and the safest, healthiest way to consume alcohol. Sticking to lighter-colored alcohols like light beers and white wine can help, as can ensuring you are consuming water along the way throughout your evening. The science is clear: the darker the booze the darker the next day! But if you’re reading this blog, it’s probably too late for prevention, so let’s get to the facts.
2. Hydrate and Replenish
Water is a great friend when you’re hungover. The medical advice is generally to ensure you continue to hydrate until your urine is clear, so follow that as a guide while being careful not to drink too much water at once.
3. Grab that coffee
Many snake oil-type cures rely on their caffeine content to restore your vibe, but save yourself the money and just grab a cup of coffee to get that jolt. It’ll help to clear that hangover fog, and might even help you to remember why you sent that message to your ex at 4 AM, or why you should never do it again!
4. Pump those Electrolytes
Downing a bottle of Powerade or Gatorade or a similar sports hydration beverage is even more important if you were dancing up a storm or, alternatively, throwing up a storm! Replacing those electrolytes is important, and will help your body get on the road to being normal again more quickly.
5. Get some Grub!
A great New York Times article has an expert advising the perfect hangover meal is actually a diner breakfast! From the article:
A classic diner meal with eggs, home fries, cheese and a bit of ham would supply vitamins B, C and zinc, Ms. Supan advised. “We lose a lot of those things when we’re drinking. We want to try to bump them up the following day.”
So forget the calorie counting and enjoy, this is an emergency situation after all!
