I am thankful that my mother is visiting my family for the first time to Canada and last week she decided she wanted to go to church. I must confess I haven’t been to church in ages so it was kind of hard for me to swallow. At first I made arrangements for a family friend to come pick her up and take her to church – after all, they go to the same church. The look in her eyes said it all, she wanted to go to church with her one and only son whom she had conquered her fear of flying and flew thousands of miles to come and see.
Oh what the heck, Sunday came and I took her to church. Walking in seeing those familiar faces I hadn’t seen in a long time with huge smiles from ear to ear made it worthwhile. I now understand how the prodigal son felt when he returned home after squandering his father’s wealth from the welcome that I received. Everyone was happy to see me, I had my son with me, whom they had last seen when he was a year or 2 old, now 6 years old. I must say everyone made me feel comfortable and I could see the twinkle in my mother’s eye as we went around greeting people. The sermon was based on being thankful and the young man who was leading the congregation asked that we dedicate the day to any one person who has done good in our lives according to us, he asked us to pray for that individual and be thankful for the good/impact they have had in our lives. The message of the sermon has stayed with me till today and as I reflect I know realize how blessed I am to have so much to be thankful of:
To everyone reading this I say a merry Christmas and wish you a prosperous 2016.
